Alan Keyes
Video is from February, but I feel that as a somewhat prominent (at
least, I'm sure, to himself) prominent black figure in American, more
people should see what this man said here and take issue with it.
Though honestly, he is so far beyond ridiculous in this video that you
might want to just laugh at him.
Saturday Night Poopsound
I really love this Yeah Yeah Yeah's song. My question is, why does
everyone sound shitty on Saturday Night Live. Everytime
some band that doesn't completely blow performs on this show, the next day
there are videos of the performance posted everywhere, and they are always really bad. I'm going to blame the Saturday Night Live sound stage for this one. Take for example:
The infamous Kanye West performance that, in my opinion, was a direct
contributor to South Park labeling him as a "gay fish". But it wasn't all his
fault:
Lesson: if you want a memorable music experience on SNL, film it
before the live taping. And include T-Pain fucking a mermaid:

Black Rain
Black Rain from Semiconductor on Vimeo.
Working with STEREO scientists, Semiconductor collected all the HI image data to date, revealing the journey of the satellites from their initial orientation, to their current tracing of the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Solar wind, CME's, passing planets and comets orbiting the sun can be seen as background stars and the milky way pass by.
Tough to explain just what watching this film feels like, but it's a pretty fantastic experience.

Not endorsing smoking cigars (there are kids on the internet)

Lately I've been thinking of getting back to the Cigarbox writing. A lack of flowing creativity in my life perhaps, or my recent obsession with blogs themselves (though sure enough, I start reading blogs and twitter makes the idea of a blog seem immediately outdated). Blogging is just a way for people to pretend they have things other people want to read about. Or, they post MP3's because they think other people should know just how great and 'authentic' (fuck you Carles) what they are listening to is. Meanwhile, hundreds of other blogs just discovered that music at the same time. Or, like us, they are always a few steps behind, and just enjoy a good tune.
Today on my daily tour of the internet I stumbled across the video of the person playing the cigarbox guitar on the previous post to this one. The playing didn't strike me as anything too special, but it made me think of college, and me and the Green Hornet obsessing over our stupid little blog (and Black Hammer always talking about posting and never posting) and I decided to post it.
Lately, and I can't exactly describe why, but I've taken an obsession to the show the West Wing, which has been off the air for a few years, but I'm sure you all remember it for beating the Sopranos for the big Emmy every year. The song "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was the Ground" was mentioned in the show, which was funny because I had recently been listening to the Dark Was The NIght comp alot (which has a cover version on it by the Kronos quartet). So I Wikipedia'ed it (yes, to me "wikipedia" can be a verb) which led me to the page of the song's creator Blind Willie Johnson, and sure enough, it mentions him starting out on a Cibarbox Guitar. I took two mentions in a day (and my often thinking of starting to write again) as signs that I should just post.
I tell this long story not because it's interesting (it's not) but instead to describe my attempt to get back to this blogging thing. I hope to add more to it than just music (videos, other cool things?). Regardless, I'm sure if anyone is reading, they at least want me to post the songs I just talked about.

Oy Division!

The film was fantastic, far better than my last trip to the movies to see Zach and Miri. The editing and composition were fantastic but the best part of movie was the involvement of so many people who were integral to the band's history. The surviving members of the band all gave lengthy commentary, along with Ian Curtis's extra-marital girlfriend Annik Honoré, Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, graphic designer Peter Saville, and Buzzcock Pete Shelley. The included interviews focused less on what happened and more on how it happened, which made for an extremely compelling story. Near the film's end, however, it was mentioned that the story doesn't conclude with Curtis' death, going on to gloss over the band's transition into New Order. This was the only part of the film I could say I was disappointed with. It seemed odd that filmmaker Grant Gee would make a point of saying how it's important to note that the story doesn't end with Curtis' death, and subsequently end his story with Curtis' death. I've always been curious how a band like Joy Division could evolve into a band like New Order, and I'd hoped this documentary would shed some light on that.
That gripe aside, the film was alternately funny and poignant, and informative. It was playing as part of BAM's Thanksgiving film series, Punk 'n' Pie, which unfortunately is over as of tonight. The movie is available on DVD, however, so if you're even a little interested in some of the stories behind an important band, check it out.

Pears, Plums, Books, Peaches
I've also been really getting into the books lately. Ive had their first album for quite some time, but it never garnered anything more than passing interest; something I wouldn't skip in shuffle, but probably wasn't seeking out otherwise. Last week though, a friend showed me a video from their 2007 dvd, Playall. This is "Smells Like Content."

Modest Mouse at MHW 6/20

So I was lucky to get a pair of tickets yesterday afternoon to the late night/early morning Modest Mouse show at the
I showed up at 1AM (when doors were scheduled to open) only to wait outside the MHW for almost an hour and endure the endless “do you have an extra ticket” questioning by everyone who walked by.
When I finally got in I claimed a spot in the upstairs balcony right on the railing which was an absolutely perfect view of everything. At this point 2:15 rolls around (the show was scheduled to start at 1:30AM), and then by 2:30 they finally come on stage. They started off great with a couple older songs and then went into more familiar material. Here’s the set list slightly out of order:
Trucker's Atlas
Breakthrough
Fire It Up
We've Got Everything
Dance Hall
Dashboard
Dramamine
The Whale Song
Wild Pack Of Family Dogs
Little Motel
Satin In A Coffin
Tiny Cities Made of Ashes
Paper Thin Walls
The Good Times Are Killing Me
I was hoping to see a couple more rarities although we did get a lot. One highlight of the night was when Isaac, who was admittedly drunk, during Tiny Cities Made in Ashes was screaming his “And the population’s you!” rant and jumped off the stage into the crowd. He started plowing through the crowd, grabbing people by the shoulders, and shaking the half-dazed hipsters while screaming in their face – it was quite a site from up in the balcony.
There’s definitely something to be said for the atmosphere a tired, bleary eyed, half drunk and stoned crowd creates but it seemed to work at this show. Overall it was a very late night, but definitely an awesome experience and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
